WCA: State Budget (2013 WI Act 20) Positive for County Government

Budget Recognizes and Strengthens Unique Partnership Between State and Counties

Governor Walker’s signing of the 2013-2015 State Budget on Sunday, June 30th closes the book on an incredibly positive budget for county government, according to the Wisconsin Counties Association.

“This budget not only provides additional resources to county programs in need of additional funding, but it also recognizes–and strengthens–the unique partnership that has long existed between the state and county government,” said WCA Executive Director Mark D. O’Connell. “While counties have succeeded in doing more with less in recent years, many provisions in this budget assure counties can continue offering important services in efficient and sustainable ways.”

WCA President and Ozaukee County Supervisor Gus “Sandy” Wirth, Jr. has traveled the state this year in his role as head of the association and believes that the budget overall is good for counties.

“As I’ve met with my peers from around the state, I’m hearing similar sentiments from our county leaders,” said Wirth. “Among the many county-related highlights in this budget, there is additional funding for state and local highways, new dollars for mental health treatment, the repeal of the county tax rate limit and additional money for county child support enforcement. County officials recognize and appreciate the state’s renewed commitment to local government.”

“The entire legislature should be commended for its work during this long and grueling budget process and particular gratitude is owed to Governor Walker, legislative leadership and members of the Joint Committee on Finance,” said O’Connell. “As county officials are keenly aware, a budget process is filled with a series of difficult decisions, with elected officials pulled in many directions. State leaders prioritized county government in this budget and we are grateful for their work.”
