Substance Screener
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Substance Screener position serves as a main point of reception and conducts substance use screens for individuals on pretrial release, in Adult Treatment Court, in a Diversion Program, or otherwise court-ordered to screening. This position is responsible for collecting samples, interpreting results, documenting, and follow up, such as referral to assigned case manager. The Substance Screener completes various inventory and invoice related tasks. This position communicates with individuals from several different departments, however, should primarily be able to work independently.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Collect observed/unobserved urine/oral fluid specimens and breath samples.
• Provides excellent customer service by greeting patients professionally and ensuring client privacy. May encounter individuals in states of crisis, intoxication, and/or with mental health needs.
• Interpret and fulfill court-ordered specimen screens.
• Ensure that all client paperwork is filled out correctly and all necessary information has been captured at the time of collection (ordered tests, billing information, date, etc.). May need to create profiles in case management system.
• Assist case managers with scheduling screening.
• Adhere to all collector protocols, procedures, and confidentiality requirements, which vary among multiple departments.
• Utilize appropriate laboratory practices in handling specimens, requisitions, and chain of custody.
• Dress appropriately (lab coat provided).
• Data entry into multiple online client records. Fax, scan, copying of documents as necessary.
• Accurately bill participants and/or programs for services and collect payments.
• Monitor and maintain supplies for both screening locations and communicate supply requests, and process invoices in a timely manner.
• Conduct self in an ethical, legal, responsible manner always with both client and staff.
• Clearly and promptly communicate with appropriate programs both verbally and in writing.
• Audit electronic monitoring equipment and supply inventory. Adjust as needed.
• Ensure accurate and timely calibration of remote breath units.
• Assist supervisors and coworkers in special projects.
• Arrange shipment of specimens and electronic monitoring equipment as necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Work is primarily in an office setting.
• Location varies between the Government Center (Hudson) and Services Center (New Richmond).
• Requires frequent, proper handling of urine and oral fluid specimens.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Associate’s degree OR a high school diploma/equivalent with two (2) years’ experience in a laboratory, healthcare, office, drug screening, or medical field.
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, lab technician certification, or related coursework in a medical field preferred, but not required.
• Successful completion of all required specimen collection and device calibration training within one (1) month of hire.
• Must successfully pass criminal background check.
Expected Pay Range: $18.89 – $21.37/hour
Full Pay Range: $18.89 – $26.32/hour
