General Summary
The position performs a variety of functions related to highway operations and maintenance including patching pavement, crack filling, removing debris, brushing, liter pick up, operating mowing equipment, routine mechanical maintenance on mowing equipment, traffic control, lawn care, cleaning shop and equipment and other routine labor work. Regular attendance and punctuality along with being prepared to commence work at designated work locations, on the assigned or scheduled days and hours is expected. Responsible for providing truthful and accurate written and verbal communications.

This seasonal position, under the direction of the Highway Commissioner, reports during the Construction Season and dates will vary.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions
1. Performs routine road maintenance activities.
2. Performs lawn care and other routine landscaping activities using gas powered trimmers, small tractors, and mowing equipment.
3. Performs routine shop and/or equipment cleaning activities. Keeping equipment clean including washing and waxing.
4. Performs routine maintenance such as greasing, maintaining fluid levels, changing and / or sharpen blades, cleaning mower deck, changing of belts, changing oil and grease and changing of mowing blades on equipment.

General Job Functions
1. Ability to operate a variety of small equipment for routine road maintenance.
2. Ability to operate one ton and pickup trucks with automatic transmission.

Requirements

Required Training and Experience
1. Must be able to operate riding lawn mowers with hydrostatic drive.
2. Current valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
1. Knowledge of operating hand-held communication radios.
2. Ability to use hand and power tools, shovels, rakes, saws, etc.
3. Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate, both verbally and in writing as well as effectively administer by written, and verbal communications.
4. Ability to use tack and courtesy in maintaining an effective working relationship with department employees, county supervisors, county officials, and general public.

Physical & Working Conditions
95% of the work is outside, cool temps in spring and fall, hot temps in summer. Mowing will be done during light rain, mowing will not be done during heavy rain or lightning. Ear plugs are needed while mowing.
Long pants and work shoes, no sandals or shorts, full shirt, short sleeves are allowed but specific jobs will require long sleeves. On occasion, lifting of 50-60 lbs. may be required.

Seasonal workers are required to adhere to all of the employee requirements of the Door County Highway Commission Employee Handbook.

In an effort to provide for continuity of County government and to cope with the problems of the emergency, you may be required to work during a proclaimed state of emergency, consistent with Sec 323.14 Wis. Stats. and County emergency management plans and programs.
