POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Communication’s Captain, this position performs specialized technical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of radio communication. Digital microwave, data and other electronic equipment and systems to support the communication needs of many departments within the County of Marathon.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or its equivalent.
> Minimum of two years of post-high school work experience in the construction, installation, testing and repair of FM land mobile, microwave and electronic communications equipment. Experience must be obtained within the last five years of job posting.
> Possession of a General Class Radio Telephone Operator’s License issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is required.
> Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license at appointment, and must be maintained throughout employment. Required to drive County vehicles as needed.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
> Post high school education, coursework, or technical training in two-way radio, electronic technology, etc., Amateur Radio or industry recognized certification (NABER, APCO, NARTE, CET, etc).
> Previous experience with the following equipment: Motorola mobile / portable & Tait mobile / portable Radios, CPS, Tait Base Stations, QS2, PTP, GPS Simulcast, JPS comparators, and tone controlled wireline consoles & remotes.
> FCC Ship Radar Endorsement.
Ability to design, assemble, and construct custom circuitry and equipment as needed to meet agency needs.
> Experience with SMT components and rework procedures.
PLC, PIC processor, BASIC / assembly language programming experience

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Installs, repairs, maintains, services and modifies communications equipment including but not limited to, two-way radios, laptop computers, mobile data computers (MDC) in squad cars, analog, digital, and simulcast radio base stations, voting receiver systems, portable and mobile radios, pagers, microwave and multiplex equipment, data networks, emergency dispatch console systems (Zetron), control equipment, recording equipment, monitoring and sound distribution systems, base station antennas and transmission lines, radar speed detectors, and radar recorders.
Tests, repairs, and optimizes transmitting and receiving equipment in accordance with FCC rules and regulations, manufacturer’s diagrams and specifications using hand tools, electrical measuring instruments, and computerized configuration software. Tests equipment for factors such as power output, frequency, sensitivity, noise level, and audio quality using oscilloscopes, service monitors, watt meters, ammeters, voltmeters, and other radio test equipment.
Installs, repairs, and maintains data transport and network equipment including wireline, wireless, fiber, Ethernet, DS1/T1, channel banks, multiplexers, routers, protection switches, and power backup systems.
Diagnoses and isolates malfunctions in a wide variety of technical equipment; researches technical service manuals and reviews schematic diagrams. Performs optimization and service to the component level. Replaces defective components and parts, such as integrated circuits, capacitors, transformers, resistors, and transistors.
Performs technical and FCC performance checks of portables, mobiles, base stations, console equipment, voting receivers, and communication equipment.
Prepares license applications and assists with renewals for all County public safety communications systems.
Certifies and repairs speed detection devices (radar equipment) as required and according to industry standards.
Responds to emergency service requests, incidents and problems (on call status) to maintain critical communication networks as needed.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other City and County departments, outside organizations, vendors and co-workers.
Maintains accurate and detailed records of services performed including labor time, materials used, and other relevant information for billing, inventory, and costing purposes.
Maintains and updates configuration documents, schematics, documentation, databases, and work logs.
Maintains test and repair equipment, tools, and workspace.
Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION:
Starting Hourly Rate: $26.38 + County Benefits
