Job Summary
Parks Maintenance 2 – Mowing Crew (LTE) positions run April through October and are responsible for the mowing and trimming aesthetics of our County Parks. With 18 parks encompassing 3,100+ acres in Brown County, these positions provide some of the most admired and measurable work of our department. These positions are for those that love the outdoors, nature, crisp mowing lines, and keeping a schedule. It is for those that understand that this task is not just about mowing, but helping to control weeds, ensuring proper grass growth, and providing quality lawns for our users to enjoy. The work of this crew is on constant display and is an opportunity to make a difference by being the focal point of many parks.

This work is primarily done 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with weekends and holidays as needed. Depending on grass growth, special events, rain events, etc. this schedule is subject to change but is a steady 40 hours per week. On-the-job training is provided, and we will supply two uniform shirts, a windbreaker, and a hat as uniforms must be worn. Lunch is one-half hour and is unpaid. Each shift, staff reviews the day’s schedule with the Field Manager, prepares and loads equipment, and dispatches by County pick-up truck to begin the day’s work. Communication skills are key as this position works within all parks and will discuss mowing operations with Rangers at each location.

Essential Duties
Safely and properly operates a variety of riding lawnmowers.

Completes general park maintenance to include weed control, raking, spreading mulch, trimming, and grading.

Operates landscape equipment such as blowers, edgers, hand pruners, pole saws, etc.

Performs light building maintenance as needed.

Completes minor repairs to outdoor park amenities such as fences, signs, signposts, gates, picnic tables, etc.

Identifies potential required maintenance and either completes or assists in maintenance.

Conducts visual park inspections to identify and report potential hazards, deficiencies, damages, etc.

Loads, unloads, and hauls materials needed to complete assigned tasks.

Completes special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:

Qualified applicants must be 18 years or older and have either their High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Those with farming experience, heavy equipment operation experience, etc. are encouraged to apply.

A basic understanding of grounds maintenance, grounds equipment, mowing, string line trimming, and turf maintenance is needed.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.

CPR and Basic First Aid are desirable, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of and experience with operating lawn equipment.

Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements.

Ability to follow directions and grasp new skills and be a self-starter.

Ability to interact and respond to citizen inquires or guide them to the right service.

Ability to always keep a positive attitude and professional demeanor, and to address residents’ and customers’ concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.

Ability to work both cooperatively with Park personnel and the public, as well as independently with little-to-no supervision throughout the County Park system.

Ability to respectfully represent Parks Department.

Ability to manage time to efficiently complete the day’s tasks/duties.

Knowledge of and ability to use a computer and the required software.

Ability to keep an accurate daily log of activities.

Ability to use hand and power tools.

Ability to run/operate County vehicles, tractors, trailers, and power equipment.

Ability to follow detailed instructions which may be oral and/or written.

Ability to read and interpret a variety of maps.

Ability to answer inquiries and complaints effectively with tact and courtesy.

Have excellent organizational skills.

Ability to work in varied weather conditions.
