GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs a variety of repairs and maintenance tasks on county highway vehicles and equipment; does related work as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned by foreman, operations manager, or commissioner. Works under the general supervision of the Operations Manager.

• Diagnose and repair problems on highway department vehicles, tools, and equipment
• Use shop truck as required to respond to equipment or vehicle location when needed for repairs
• Perform required scheduled and preventative maintenance on highway department vehicles and equipment
• Weld and fabricate as necessary for highway operations and fleet repair
• Keep shop and shop equipment in order
• Keep shop vehicles in order
• Make recommendations for equipment repair and replacement to Highway Operations Manager and Highway Commissioner as requested
• Make recommendations for parts stock levels to Highway Operations Manager
• Provide coverage for Operations Manager during absences
• Assist, train, and support other shop personnel as necessary
• Communicate with supervisors and other staff on equipment status and pending repairs
• Perform seasonal preparations of equipment to ensure equipment is ready when needed
• Perform seasonal preparation of plow trucks at beginning and end of snow plowing seasons
• Inform Highway Operations Manager when it is determined that repairs need to be done by outside repair facilities
• Serve as backup snow plow operator or truck driver when directed by supervisor
• Maintain facility grounds as directed
• Must be available for call in for winter snow and ice removal and other emergency and non-emergency situations

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITLIES:

• Skills and Abilities to diagnose complex vehicle and equipment defects
• Ability to repair and maintain a diverse fleet of highway vehicles, heavy and light duty construction equipment, small tools, and related items
• Knowledge and skill to repair and maintain small engine tools such as chain saws
• Ability to weld and fabricate
• Ability to utilize printed and online resources to execute repairs and maintenance
• Ability to follow written and oral directions
• Knowledge in electronic vehicle systems
• Knowledge in current vehicle emissions systems
• Knowledge in vehicle and equipment hydraulic systems
• Knowledge in automotive mechanics
• Knowledge in diesel mechanics
• Knowledge in small engines
• Knowledge in equipment mechanics
• Ability to work independently or with a team
• Ability to work safety and utilize proper Personal Protective Equipment
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; take responsibility for quality and timeliness of work; complete assigned tasks and report progress
• Ability to train new staff in the necessary skills needed
• Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public
• Ability to work assigned hours of the position, and availability to work flexible hours including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays due to adverse weather conditions, construction projects, or other emergency service.
• Must be dependable and in good physical condition

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Valid Class A, B, C Commercial Driver’s License with “N” tanker endorsement
o Without E or L restrictions
o Up to 6 months to obtain a CDL may be considered
• Standard high school diploma or equivalent
• Vocational technical training in automotive mechanics, diesel mechanics or similar field, or equivalent job experience
• Must supply own tools

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Specific mechanical training or equivalent work experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Ability to safely lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently is required. Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and kneeling required. Ability to work outdoors with exposure to outdoor elements (hot, cold, wet, etc.)
