Job Description:

This position is responsible for all aspects of repair and maintenance of the Highway
Department’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. Functions as a spare truck operator when
needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or
all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Performs diagnosis of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems on vehicles and
equipment; determines best practices and performs repairs to return unit to service.
• Performs scheduled, non-scheduled, and emergency repairs.
• Uses and maintains all shop equipment and tools.
• Implements preventative maintenance on County units.
• Completes and maintains shop records and inventory controls.
• Manages and analyzes the County’s equipment, including the maintenance schedules.
• Organizes equipment repair lists.
• Instructs other employees in the proper use and maintenance of equipment.
• Operates heavy equipment and snowplow vehicles and equipment.
• Maintains and operates shop area in a well-organized, safe, and orderly manner.
• Participates in safety training required by county, state, and federal agencies.
• Attends trainings and meetings.
• Must provide tools to properly complete jobs.
• Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or equivalent and two years vocational education in the field of AG-Power,
diesel and automotive mechanics and one-year applicable experience; or combination of
education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a
valid Wisconsin CDL driver’s license and must submit to random drug and alcohol testing.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
• Knowledge of hydraulic systems and principles of heavy diesel engines, electrical
principles, and air-conditioning.
• Knowledge of air braking systems, hydraulic braking systems, automotive engines &
transmission repair, and small engines.
• Knowledge and skill with computer diagnostics.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions and procedure manuals.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to safe operation
of equipment, tools, and industrial settings.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule
form.
• Knowledge and skill in operating a wide variety of heavy and light department equipment
including computer hardware and software systems.
• Ability to be available as needed outside normal work schedule.
• Ability to use independent judgment.
• Ability to handle a variety of typical assignments and problems under moderate
supervision within standard operating procedures.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid adjustments,
such as motor vehicles, calculator, and computer terminal.
• Need for finger dexterity, using hearing, near and far vision.
• Ability to exert moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some
combination of climbing and balancing, standing, kneeling, walking, crouching, lifting,
carrying, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration.
• Ability to lift 100 pounds.
Working Conditions
• Exposure to environmental factors such as vast temperature variations, adverse weather
conditions, noise, dust, fumes, wetness, and smoke.
• Exposure to working around machinery and traffic hazards.
• Ability to work in conditions that may cause some discomfort and present a risk of injury.
Special Requirement
As a post-offer pre-employment condition, a criminal background check must be completed and
passed. Richland County may disqualify an applicant if the position’s responsibilities are
substantially related to the applicant’s criminal history. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law,
