Position Title: Maintenance Technician
Reports to: Highway Commissioner, Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist

Position Summary

This position description has been prepared to assist in evaluating duties, responsibilities, and skills of the position. It is not intended as a complete list of specific responsibilities and duties, nor is it intended to limit duties to those listed.

This position maintains the grounds, equipment and facility in a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with established procedures, and as directed by the Lead Maintenance Specialist and/or Highway Commissioner. This position is shared between all County buildings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs routine maintenance on grounds, parking areas and driveways as necessary and directed.
Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures to assure that the maintenance of the facility and equipment is current at all time. Reviews annually.
Assures that the facility and equipment are properly maintained for safety, comfort and convenience of employees and visitors.
Attends in-services yearly (fire safety, inclement weather, etc.)
Follows all life safety codes as they relate to the facility.
Establishes an effective preventative maintenance program for all buildings with Lead Maintenance Specialist.
Establish a priority system on unscheduled maintenance with Lead Maintenance Specialist.
Maintains the heating and cooling units/system is in proper working condition, as specified by manufacturer.
Maintains current written records of department maintenance, new equipment, installations, etc.
Performs routine maintenance on grounds, parking areas, driveways, etc. by cutting trimming, pruning, policing, sweeping, snow removal, etc. as necessary or instructed.
On-call for emergency situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsible for working safely and in compliance with facility safety policies, procedures, and standards; reports and/or corrects any observed or potential safety hazards.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and external partners.
Communicates and coordinates with city and county department heads, managers, vendors, and local service providers as needed.
Must notify supervisor if a valid driver’s license or acceptable driving record is not maintained, as required for job-related travel.
Performs road patching, snow removal, and other road or grounds maintenance tasks as assigned.
Willing to work outside of standard hours, including evenings, weekends, or in alternate positions, as needed to support department operations.
Required to be on-call to respond to emergency situations or urgent maintenance needs outside of regular working hours.
Performs other related duties as required or directed.

Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a stationary position (standing or sitting) and move about for extended periods.
Ability to lift, push, pull, and move equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Regularly exposed to interruptions, which may require shifting focus quickly.
May be exposed to workplace hazards such as moving equipment, sharp objects, high temperatures, and strong odors.
Possible exposure to infectious agents, hazardous materials, and contaminated surfaces.
Uses breathing apparatus, hearing, gloves, and eye protection as necessary.
Ability to work in confined or restricted spaces as required by specific maintenance tasks.
Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Proficiency in using office and maintenance-related technology, including computers, printers, and mobile devices.
Visual acuity necessary to read printed materials, digital screens, and perform detailed inspections.
Manual dexterity and coordination to operate tools, use keyboards, and complete repetitive tasks.
Must be able to interact with the public and coworkers in a courteous and professional manner.
Travel between Vernon County locations to perform assigned duties.
Ability to handle occasional high-pressure situations, including tight deadlines and emergency repairs.
Minimal potential for exposure to blood or bodily fluids, depending on work assignments.

Education and Training Requirements

High school graduate or GED; 1-2 years vocational experience and 2 or more years of maintenance work covering multiple facilities/buildings. In evaluating candidates for this position, the County may consider a combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

HVAC, plumbing and/or electrical experience is preferred

Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with adequate auto insurance to meet minimum County requirements, or access to reliable transportation for city and rural travel.
