Job Title: EMT/Fire Prevention and Maintenance- Full Time
Department: EMS
Reports To: EMS Director in collaboration with the Fire Commission, Chief or Officer.

Position Summary
The EMT/Fire Prevention and Maintenance position functions independently, as well as in a team setting, providing exceptional pre-hospital clinical medicine based on licensure Scope of Practice as well as perform fire inspections, community fire prevention, fire apparatus and equipment maintenance checks and scheduling, clerical tasks, basic custodial duties and related work Employee will be an active volunteer firefighter and/or engineer on the Fire Department. Must be able to utilize electronic communication, including portable and mobile radios, electronic patient care records, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Once cleared to independent duty, providers are required to manage medical and trauma patients, directing co-workers, first responders and bystanders. Must be able to maintain and trouble shoot medical equipment as well as keep equipment and vehicle clean and response ready.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, perform high quality patient assessments, and make critical care decisions quickly to develop a pre-hospital stabilization and treatment plan.
• Collect pertinent patient care data and enter the information into department patient care reports and reporting software.
• Exhibits excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Communicates clearly with the patient, co-workers, first responders, bystanders, and other healthcare professionals to provide high quality, prehospital patient care.
• Ability to assess emergency scenes.
• Ability to identify scene safety issues, implement, adjust, and maintain scene safety as situations change.
• Handle non-medical situations such as crowd control and protecting the valuables of a patient if necessary.
• Operate EMS/Fire vehicles under normal and emergency conditions in a safe manner.
• Operate standard equipment such as stretchers, cots, patient care monitors, and standard diagnostic equipment.
• Inspect buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations. Identify corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards. Communicate these measures to property owners, business owners and/or their representatives.
• Write reports of fire inspections performed, fire code violations observed, and corrective recommendations offered. Conduct fire code compliance follow-ups to ensure that corrective actions have been taken in cases where violations were found.
• Inspect fire protection and/or fire detection systems to verify that such systems are installed in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
• Inspect properties that store, handle, and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws, codes and regulations.
• Review and inspect new or remodeled buildings to ensure the structure meets fire safety codes.
• Attend training classes and meetings to maintain current knowledge of fire prevention, safety, and firefighting procedures.
• Coordinate, schedule, and facilitate in public education events. Provide public education on fire prevention, fire safety, and emergency preparedness within the community.
• Perform vehicle checks and schedule service of fire apparatus, fire equipment, hazardous material equipment, and technical rescue gear.
• Basic understanding of principles and practices of building construction with regard to fire safety.
• Knowledge of building, electrical, and mechanical codes to include principles and practices of building construction as it pertains to fire safety
• Extricate people from vehicles; kneel, bend, lift, and stand for extended periods of time.
• Perform CPR for extended periods of time.
• Be able to remain calm and deliver quality care in high-pressure, extreme stress, situations.
• Maintain good physical condition and personal hygiene.
• Perform appropriate clean up and disposal of contaminated items when necessary.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Assist in public relations and recruiting of new personnel.
• Knowledge of computer processing.
• Vocational or business skills such as typing, operating business machines such as fax machines and copiers.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public and work effectively as a team member.
• Complies with all Lafayette County EMS and Darlington Fire Department regulations, guidelines, polices and bylaws.
• Must remain in good standing with Fire and EMS boards and members.

Education/Licensure/Certification Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher certification required within one year of hire.
• Valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Certification required.
• Wisconsin Certified Firefighter I and II required.
• Wisconsin Certified Fire Inspector course completion required, certification preferred.
• Wisconsin Entry Level Driver/Operator required.
• Wisconsin Fire Officer course completion required, Fire Officer/Instructor preferred.
• Valid Driver’s License. CDL preferred but not required. Must meet vehicle insurance company requirements.
• Must be at least 21 years old to operate an emergency vehicle. Those under the age of 21 are restricted from driving but are allowed to provide patient care.

Time Commitment
• Work 40 hours a week or other schedule as directed by the EMS Director and Fire Chiefs.
• Work may require some evenings and weekend hours.
• Respond to second ambulance requests as available, be on-call while primary crew takes transfers as available.
• Pick up open EMS shifts as available.
• Attend Fire and EMS trainings, meetings and events.
• Attend monthly Fire Commission meetings to report on performed and upcoming duties.

Typical Physical Demands:
• Ability to use full range of body motion and dexterity to allow significant handling, transferring, pushing/pulling, and lifting of patients and equipment.
• Ability to frequently lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift, carry, push or pull over 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand and or walk 80-90% of shift; and sit 10-20% of shift.
• Ability to use good hand/eye coordination, and finger dexterity.
• Ability to use good perception and discrimination related to odor, color, and textures.
• Ability to use good perception and discrimination related to functional visual ability and depth perception; sound perception; and functional speech.
• Ability to frequently bend, twist, balance, and reach above and below shoulder level; as well as occasionally kneel and climb as necessary to perform job duties.
• Ability to wear Fire and EMS protective equipment to include turnout gear and SCBAs.
• Ability to work irregular hours.
