As a semi-skilled worker in the County Highway Department, you will patrol the road and perform damage repairs, cleanup, snow plowing, and other roadwork duties. You will use your independent judgment and often work alone. But don’t worry, you’ll be part of a supportive, collaborative, inclusive, and diverse workforce that values teamwork, honesty, and integrity.
This is a full-time position with hours that allow balance between work and personal life.
Summer: Monday-Thursday 6:00am-4:00pm.
Winter: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:00pm.
Wage Range: $24.40 – $29.89

Operates dump truck with plow, wing and sander; operates loader and wheel tractor for mowing.
Performs road patching and road maintenance; plows snow; picks up trash and debris along roadside and other debris on or along the road.
Operates and assists in the maintenance of standard highway equipment.
Erects snow fences, guardrails and signs.
Receives complaints and requests from the public.
Keeps records of work performed and time involved in performing the work.
Maintains availability and accessibility by phone for overtime work during snowstorms or when other road damage occurs.
Works safely and follows safety practices and standards of the County Highway Department; responsible for reporting and/or correcting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Working knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in highway construction and maintenance.
•General knowledge and experience in snow plowing, sanding, mowing, patching and road maintenance operations.
•Considerable knowledge of road system.
•Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
•Ability to work in varying climatic conditions.
•Ability to use a variety of highway construction and maintenance equipment proficiently and safely; mechanical aptitude.
•Ability to work with the general public.
•Ability to keep records and make reports of time and activities.
•Ability to work without direct supervision when necessary.
Training, Experience and Other Requirements
•Graduation from high school or GED, with ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions.
•Previous work experience operating heavy equipment to perform road grading/snow plowing, road construction, and manual labor.
•Successful passing of machinery operations skills tests.
•Must be available for overtime work.
•Good work record and proven track record of dependability.
•Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
•At the time of hire, must have valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement.
•Within six months after hire, must obtain tanker and combination vehicle endorsements.
•Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen due to CDL requirements.
