NATURE OF WORK
This is a position with considerable responsibility for the efficient repair and maintenance of the Lafayette County Highway Department trucks and equipment. Performs work under the supervision of the Highway Commissioner and the State Patrol Superintendent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• Graduation from high school or high school equivalency required
• Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license with air brake and combination endorsements

Experience:
• Must have schooling and/or two years of experience performing tune-ups and repair of diesel and gasoline engines
• Experience as heavy-duty mechanic or combination of training/experience, which provide required knowledge and skills
• Experience as a mechanic of construction, truck-type equipment, shop equipment repair and maintenance a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Adept to welding techniques with wire feed or stick welder
• Ability to use plasma cutter and also oxygen and acetylene torches
• Ability to troubleshoot heavy-duty truck electrical wiring
• Ability to lift a minimum of 70 lbs.
• Responsible with tools and understand safe methods of use
• Willing to accept and correctly fulfill job orders as given with written or oral instructions
• Ability to fill out time sheets allocating time effectively to the duties performed during the day
• Reading, writing and math skills adequate enough to interpret manuals, etc.
• Knowledge of truck and heavy equipment hydraulics preferred
• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under general direction, to:
• Repair heavy equipment including dump trucks, graders, excavators, loaders, dozers, bituminous equip., etc.
• Tear down and rebuild all types of heavy equipment as scheduled
• Design parts to fit heavy equipment if practical or if parts are not available
• Operation of road construction/maintenance equipment preferred
• Perform such other duties as may be assigned
• Will be subject to Emergency Call-In
• Evening, weekend and holiday work will be required as needed

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General and specific assignments are received and work is performed according to methods and procedures with allowance for some independence in judgment in accomplishing the assignments.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May supervise limited term employees or student interns.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
At times work is done in the field with less than adequate conveniences.

• Personal protective equipment is required for many job tasks
• Exposure to vibrations, noise, and odor from heavy equipment
