Job Description:

Job Summary
Performs a variety of heavy manual labor in highway construction and general maintenance work.

Starting Pay: $24.98/hour, increasing to $25.85/hour after successful completion of the 6-month initial employment period
Essential Duties
Operates heavy-duty snowplow trucks and motor-graders in plowing and salting State, County and Town rural roads and urban streets.

Performs construction and repair work on bridges and highways, which may include grinding, welding, tarring, patching, concrete removal with air hammer and concrete finishing.

Operates construction equipment on the construction of asphalt roadways and streets.

Performs cutting and removal of trees and brush; picks up trash and stones; cuts and rakes grass and weeds; cleans culverts.

Operates dump trucks in hauling construction materials, such as stone, gravel, soils and asphalt hot mix.

Performs asphalt paving work with the paving crew, which may include paver and roller operation and hand work.

Sets up traffic control signing for highway maintenance and construction work zones; flags traffic on roadway paving and construction projects.

Performs yard and building maintenance work.

Performs related work when responding to emergency call-ins.

Performs related functions as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, along with additional training in welding, carpentry, and truck driving, plus two years of working experience as either a dump truck driver, construction equipment operator, road construction worker or general laborer in a related field including farm operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certification:
Valid Wisconsin Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsements, or the ability to obtain the tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of roadway grading and excavation, asphalt paving and concrete construction.

Working knowledge of snowplowing with a heavy-duty dump truck and/or motor-grader.

Working knowledge of construction materials, such as concrete, hot mix asphalt, gravel/stone and sand.

Ability to plow snow over 16-hour work shifts during snowstorm conditions.

Knowledge and skill of welding.

Ability to operate heavy construction equipment.

Ability to drive dump and semi-trailer trucks.

Ability to operate farm equipment.

Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment while in use.

Ability to respond to emergency call-ins within a reasonable period of time.

Ability to work the required hours of the position.
