Do you have experience operating heavy equipment and enjoy being outside? If so, Monroe County’s Highway Department might have the job for you! We are hiring for a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator. Successful candidates will have a minimum of three years’ experience operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment. Three years of experience in highway and bridge maintenance, repair, and construction is desired. A valid, unrestricted, Wisconsin Class A CDL (air-brake and manual transmission qualified) with tanker (N) endorsement is required. The following certifications are preferred: Flagger (Traffic Control) certification, certification training as Traffic Control Technician, Traffic Incident Management Training certification, Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) Miner certification, and First Aid/CPR certification. Candidates with an equivalent combination of training and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired may also be considered.

Our Heavy Equipment Operator skillfully operates all of the Highway Department equipment to include motor graders, hydraulic excavators, crawler tractors, wheel loaders, backhoes, compactors, road wideners, oil distributors, tractor/trailers, screening plants, and asphalt paving machines. This position is responsible for reading and following project plans and grade controls. Experience in finish grading on highway construction projects is desired. The Heavy Equipment Operator provides positive leadership in department safety and training activities and ensures on-site safety practices are followed as implemented, as well as, trains other employees on equipment operation and project activity.
Starting salary for this position is $22.76 – $24.58/hr. based on experience and qualifications. Considerable overtime may be required especially during the winter months’ snow events.
