Waushara County is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Environmental Health Specialist / Registered Sanitarian to join our Public Health team. Position Overview
The Environmental Health Specialist / Registered Sanitarian plays a critical role in protecting the community from environmental hazards and promoting safe, healthy living conditions. Under the supervision of the Environmental Health Program Manager and the Health Officer, you will:
• License and inspect food establishments, campgrounds, lodging facilities, recreational-educational camps, public pools, and body art establishments to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal public health laws.
• Investigate and respond to complaints about human health hazards, public health nuisances, and environmental concerns; issue orders or recommendations for corrective action and conduct follow-up inspections.
• Collaborate with health staff to investigate outbreaks of foodborne and waterborne illnesses, gathering environmental data to support disease control efforts.
• Consult with private well owners regarding proper well operation, maintenance, and water safety; collect water samples for testing.
• Collect and analyze samples of water, food, soil, and hazardous materials; perform field tests to identify environmental risks.
• Educate and advise business owners, contractors, realtors, municipalities, and the public on environmental health standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
• Support emergency preparedness efforts by participating in required ICS/NIMS training and assisting in the county’s emergency response when needed.

Compensation & Benefits
• Hourly Wage: $28.46 – $30.36 per hour, depending on relevant experience.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, physical or biological sciences, or a related field.
• Eligible to obtain Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian designation within 5 years of hire.
• Knowledge of public health laws, environmental health practices, and sanitation principles.
• Strong skills in communication, report writing, investigation, and public education.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with a team.
• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and reliable transportation for regular travel within the county.
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator, when necessary.

Work Environment
This role involves both office and field work:
• Regular inspections in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to noise, dust, heat, humidity, and unsanitary conditions.
• Use of protective equipment as required.
• Some lifting, walking, bending, and field sampling activities.
• Regular travel within Waushara County.
