POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for performing professional civil engineering technical support work relating to highway system planning, design, construction, and maintenance activities for county highways, bridges, culverts, and other appurtenances on the county road system; assists with other state and local road projects as requested; performs other related work as required; leads department staff; schedules, coordinates, oversees and supervises County general road maintenance, summer paving program, and winter maintenance programs.

The Marathon County Highway Department maintains over 600 miles of county highways, 900 lane miles of state highways. The department maintains this infrastructure with county construction crews and contractor crews that replace culverts, maintain rights-of-way, build bridges, pave asphalt, and perform all summer and winter highway maintenance activities. The Engineering Technician will work with leadership staff to plan and implement the work of the department through the county crews and contractor crews.

The employee will typically work Monday – Friday during winter hours and Monday – Thursday for summer hours and must be available as needed to meet the needs of the Department outside of normal work hours.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field OR six (6) years of related work experience
Must be available and willing to work significant overtime as requested

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-Four (4) or more years of full-time experience performing roadway design utilizing CADD software and survey work utilizing modern survey techniques including basic hydrology and hydraulic computations
-Four (4) or more years of full-time experience in asphalt industry
-Experience performing roadway and/or bridge construction, materials, soils, and/or right-of-way activities
-Considerable experience asphalt testing and general paving operations
-Experience with local, State, and Federal governmental agency permit processes and requirements
-Maintain various WisDOT construction technical certifications

COMPENSATION:
Starting Salary Range (B32): Minimum $28.00/hr – Control Point: $31.27/hr
