Job Description:

Under general supervision of the Coroner, the Deputy Coroner manages assigned cases, conducting investigations of deaths of unusual or violent nature, and performing duties as outlined in Wisconsin State Statutes 979 Investigation of Deaths, 59.34 Coroner duties, and any other statutes that apply.

Hours for this role are:
This role is mainly for day shift during the week, however, nights and weekends are as needed to help support the department.
12 hour on call shifts Sunday through Saturday.
On call, as assigned.

*This position is paid per diem
Key Responsibilities:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responds to calls to death scenes, makes observations, questions witnesses, and examines evidence to determine the cause of death, notifies appropriate personnel per Wisconsin State Statutes.

Collects samples, specimens, and body fluids for laboratory analysis.

Arranges for pathological or mediocolegal examinations and other tests, including autopsies, as assigned by Coroner.
Notifies family of the deceased in a professional manner which may include death notification and appropriate release of all information relating to the cause and manner of death.
Obtains personal data and medical history of deceased, examines documents and interviews relatives, friends and acquaintances.

Provides post mortem assistance to families relating to matters such as insurance, social security, veterans affairs, clergy, public health, medical care, etc.
Completes appropriate paperwork according to department policy, including signing Death Certificates and issuing permits.

Takes responsibility for personal belongings of deceased; arranges for disposal or interment of unclaimed bodies.
Testifies at inquests, hearings, and court trials as requested.

Maintain continuing education to take testing for the ABMDI (American Board of Medial Death Investigation) with certification.

Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements:
Graduate from high school or GED, supplemented with clerical training and two years accredited post high school education.

At least two years relevant healthcare/medical experience.

Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license

Required or Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of and ability to follow and apply Wisconsin State Statutes and laws related to the Coroner’s Office.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of human body and associated pathophysiology of disease processes.
Knowledge of and ability to apply the policies, practices and procedures of death investigations, collection of body samples, etc.
Knowledge of infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
Ability to testify clearly and accurately in court.
Ability to use deductive and inductive reasoning to obtain information and reach valid conclusions.
Ability to remain calm and objective in crisis situations.
Knowledge of an ability to use computer software and applications used by the department.
Ability to operate a variety of office machines including personal computer, photocopier, fax machine and telephone.
Ability to use and read medical equipment, and interpret the results.
Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including medical, legal and law enforcement terminology and Wisconsin State Statutes.
Knowledge of the goals, policies and procedures of the Coroner’s Office.
Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
Ability to work independently making sound decisions and using good judgement.
Ability to effectively communicate in English and understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, District Attorney’s office, Deputy Coroners, medical and hospital nursing staff, funeral directors, families, and the general public.
Demonstrate reliability in attendance and flexibility to work hours.
Ability to organize and schedule work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers and subordinates.
Ability to hear, speak, walk, stoop, climb, lift, carry, bend, stretch, push, pull, and able to move bodies with assistance, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
