Job Description:

Reporting to the Family Court Commissioner, the Court Reporter makes verbatim records of Court proceedings, and prepares transcripts of proceedings as required. This can be done as a Stenographic/Voice Writer Court Reporter or a Digital Court Reporter.

**This is a Part Time position

The typical hours for this role but may be subject to change are:
Wednesday through Friday every week and the first Tuesday of the month. Those days are all 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

This position is located at the Outagamie County Government Center located in downtown Appleton, Wisconsin.

Key Responsibilities:
The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Stenographic/Voice Writer ā€“ records verbatim Court proceedings as required by Wisconsin Statutes.
Digital Court Reporter ā€“ use digital audio recording equipment to produce a recording suitable for transcription.
Prepares transcripts of Court proceedings as requested.
Serves as back up to the office clerical staff with telephone reception and assisting the general public.
Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements:
Stenographer/Voice Writer Court Reporter – Graduation from a court reporting school approved by either the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA) or Successful completion of the Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) examination administered by NCRA or Successful completion of the Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) examination administered by NVRA or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
Digital Court Reporter ā€“ training and experience in legal terminology and procedures; courses and/or experience in legal/court administrative or record keeping practices (paralegal/legal secretary); demonstrated English grammar, spelling, composition and punctuation skills; experience in a court or legal setting; ability to operate digital audio recording equipment, produce a record suitable for transcription and production of a transcript from the digital recording. Preferred Certified Electronic Reporter and Transcriber certification from the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (or equivalent); or combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.

Required or Preferred Skills:
Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents
Ability to prepare various documents including invoices, billings and purchase orders.
Accuracy: Court reporters must create error-free transcripts that serve as legal records.
Concentration: Court reporters need to be able to focus for long periods of time to capture every word that is said.
Speed: Court reporters must be able to capture testimony quickly.
Attention to detail: Court reporters must be able to record gestures and other nonverbal communication.
Communication: Court reporters need strong written and verbal communication skills.
Organization: Court reporters need to be highly organized and able to perform multiple tasks.
Time management: Court reporters need to be able to work under tight deadlines.
Confidentiality: Court reporters need to be able to maintain client confidentiality.
Legal knowledge: Court reporters need to be familiar with legal and medical terminology.
Stenography: Court reporters need to be able to operate stenography equipment to take notes during court proceedings.
Environment: Court reporters may need to sit for long periods of time, and may occasionally move objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Occasional reaching to a high or low level area
Ability to accurately type a minimum of 50 wpm
