Job Summary
The Circulation Assistant supports public access to library resources by performing routine clerical, customer service, technical support tasks at library branches. This role contributes to the efficiency and welcoming atmosphere of the library through circulation services, user assistance, shelving, and ensures accurate data entry and recordkeeping in alignment with library procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Processes the checkout and return of library materials using the circulation software.
2. Provides basic support to patrons using equipment such as photocopiers, microfilm readers, desktop computers, audiovisual equipment, e-readers, and mobile devices; demonstrates usage as needed.
3. Receives payment for overdue charges and damaged materials and issues receipts.
4. Answers incoming calls, provides information, and routes inquiries to appropriate staff members.
5. Issues and updates library cards by verifying patron information and accurately entering data into the system.
6. Assists with daily library operations in the absence of the branch manager, ensuring consistent patron service and building oversight.
7. Sorts, shelves, and organizes library materials following the library classification protocols.
8. Maintains orderly shelving through shelf-reading, reshelving misplaced items, and straightening displays to ensure material accessibility.
9. Performs clerical tasks such as alphabetizing, filing circulation or registration records, and updating service logs.
10. Retrieves library materials to fulfill patron or staff requests.
11. Communicates clearly and professionally in both written and verbal interactions with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.

Required Education & Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one (1) year of experience using personal computers, preferably including Microsoft Office; ability to learn library software.
• Working knowledge of tablets, e-reading and mobile devices, with the ability to explain and support their use.

Preferred Education & Experience
• At least One (1) year of experience working in a customer service or public-facing role.
• Previous experience in a library or similar public service setting.
• Bilingual/Spanish

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and occasional climbing while shelving materials. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull up to 25 pounds intermittently throughout the workday. Tasks involve reaching, handling, and fingering materials, as well as near and far visual acuity. Position requires sufficient reading ability, verbal communication, and hearing ability to exchange information with patrons and staff in person, by telephone, and through written materials.
Work is primarily performed in an indoor library setting with minimal exposure to noise, temperature fluctuations, or environmental hazards. Regular interaction with the public is a key component of the role. Travel between branches or offsite work can be required.
