POSITION SUMMARY
This is a general labor position responsible for maintaining Vernon County buildings in a clean, safe, professional, and well-functioning condition. Employee must take pride in their work, recognize what needs to be done, and take initiative to address the issues. This position involves more than following a checklist; you must be dependable and willing to assist wherever needed to keep Vernon County facilities operating properly. While this position is under the general supervision of the Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist, you will often work alone with no direct supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cleans and maintains floors by sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, vacuuming, striping, waxing and buffing.
Cleans windows, doors, walls, fixtures, furniture, and other building surfaces.
Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies.
Empties trash and recycling containers, sorts recyclables, and transports materials to designated areas.
Maintains entrances, sidewalks, and public areas in a clean and safe condition.
Operates snow removal equipment and removes snow in winter months.
Operates tractor with mower and weed trimmer.
Performs routine maintenance on grounds, parking areas, driveways, etc. by pruning, sweeping, etc. as necessary or instructed.
Assists in building security by checking doors and lights.
Watches for evidence of fire hazards and/or vandalism.
Operates custodial and maintenance equipment safely and properly.
Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and installs equipment in which some skill is necessary.
Inventories cleaning products, paper products, and other custodial supplies and order as necessary.
Ensures custodial equipment and work area are in a clean and organized condition.
RELATED JOB FUNCTIONS
Cleans and properly stores all equipment at the end of each shift.
Responsible for working safely and following safety practices and standards of the facility; responsible for reporting and/or correcting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.
Attends staff meetings and training sessions
Responsible for advising supervisor if valid driver’s license and good driving record are not maintained.
Willing to work outside of standard hours, including evenings, weekends, or in alternate positions, as needed to support department operations.
Drives company vehicles for various duties.
Performs related work as required or directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of cleaning procedures, methods, materials, and proper use of equipment.
Knowledge of general maintenance work and repair of mechanical devices.
Knowledge in various floor care and maintenance programs.
Knowledge of painting techniques and wall repair methods.
Knowledge of lawn care, snow removal, and proper operation of equipment.
Ability to perform simple mathematical problems accurately.
The ability to safely operate, maintain, and service equipment and systems including various types of power, hand, and building maintenance machinery, tools, and equipment (i.e. lawnmowers, saws, tractor, floor buffer, vacuum, power tools, etc.).
Ability to use common tools and to operate machinery and equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move about for extended periods of time.
Frequently involves lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
Involves bending, reaching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs, and using ladders.
May occasionally require heavy physical effort, including lifting or moving objects weighing 50 to 100 pounds, and performing pushing or pulling tasks at similar force levels.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, or inclement weather conditions.
May be exposed to moving vehicles, dust, noise, vibrations, fumes, gases, odors, mechanical and chemical hazards, and other potentially hazardous conditions.
Proficiency in using office equipment such as computers, printers, and copiers is required.
Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens, as well as manual dexterity for handling equipment and performing tasks like filing and organizing.
Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and county staff in person and over the phone.
Travel to various Vernon County locations.
Must be able to manage occasional stressful situations and meet deadlines.
Involves potential for direct exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from accredited high school or GED required.
Prefer advanced training at a technical school and one to two years of related work experience, including electrical experience, knowledge of minor plumbing and carpentry. A combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with adequate auto insurance to meet minimum County requirements, or access to reliable transportation for city and rural travel.
