Chippewa County is seeking a forward-thinking Highway Commissioner to lead and innovate within our Highway Department! This vital role—defined under Wis. Stat. §83.01—is responsible for overseeing the County’s highway operations and non-highway fleet, while shaping regional and statewide transportation initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading and managing all functions of the Highway Department
• Representing the County’s transportation interests at regional and state levels
• Directing the operation and maintenance of the County’s non-highway fleet

We’re looking for a seasoned professional with the right mix of leadership, expertise, and highway know-how. Here’s what we’re looking for:
Required:
• Associate’s degree with an emphasis in Business Administration, Civil Engineering or related field
• 12+ years of highway, public works, transportation, or construction experience
• 5+ years of supervisory experience
• Valid driver’s license and access to a cell phone
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Civil Engineering, or related field
• 8+ years of highway, public works, transportation, or construction experience
• Experience in managing state and federal transportation projects
• Background in highway construction a strong plus
Starting Wage: $51.75 – $60.18 per hour depending on qualifications plus an excellent fringe benefit package. Maximum Wage: $72.21 per hour
