Job Title: Seasonal Highway Maintenance
Hours: Temporary; Four 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday
Department: Highway
Reports to: Highway Commissioner and/or Patrol Superintendent(s)
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Position Purpose: Assist in the repair and maintenance of County roadways.

Position Summary:
Perform manual labor and operate hand tools, motorized hand operated equipment and motor vehicles in the maintenance and repair of assigned roads and right of way. This may including operating a variety of vehicles (that do not require a Commercial Driver’s License) and various other types of maintenance and construction equipment.

Qualifications:
• Must be at least 16 years old
• Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of the techniques, methods, materials and equipment used in highway maintenance and improvement
• Knowledge of equipment repair and maintenance procedures
• Ability to move up to 60 lbs. repetitively
• Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions
• Ability to bend, lift and stoop to perform duties
• Ability to manipulate controls to operate equipment
• Ability to work well in teams of co-workers
• Ability to accept constructive criticism
• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others

Essential Functions:
• Controls traffic by setting barricades, cones and arrow boards and by using hand signals and flags
• Paves and patches road surfaces
• Fills in and spreads gravel on roadways and shoulders
• Repairs and maintains culverts, ditches, bridges, signs, posts and guardrails
• Repairs and maintains right of way by mowing, cutting brush, wood and weeds, picking up rubbish, spreading dirt and laying sod or seeding
• Operates highway maintenance equipment including crack routers, shovels, asphalt rakes, brooms, hand and small power tools and a variety of vehicles (that do not require a Commercial Driver’s License) such as pickup trucks
• Performs other duties as assigned

Environmental Factors:
• Exposure to construction hazards such as traffic, dust and dirt
• Exposure to vibrations, noise and odor from heavy equipment
• Exposure to adverse weather/environmental conditions
