Law Enforcement Internship
Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department
January 2025 – December 2025

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department is offering a paid one-year internship program to assist students in furthering their experience and education in the field of criminal justice.

What will the internship look like?

Here’s the fun part! The program will prepare you for the responsibilities and duties required of a law enforcement officer in order to provide efficient and effective police services within the community. You will attend the part-time law enforcement academy at Gateway Technical College followed by field training with a Kenosha County Deputy Sheriff.

Upon successfully completing the Law Enforcement Academy and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department field training program, the student may be subject to hire!

What are the schedule requirements?

The successful candidate will be required to meet the attendance requirements of the 2025 part-time Law Enforcement Academy with Gateway Technical College, Kenosha Campus, during the timeframe of January 2025 – August 2025, (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM; Wednesday 4:30 PM – 9:30 PM).
Below is the tentative academy schedule.
01/07/2025 – Tentative Kenosha County start date
01/13/2025 – Gateway Technical College part-time academy starts
08/04/2025 – 8 hours days start (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
08/29/2025 – Graduation Day

Following the completion of the academy, the successful candidate will participate in the Sheriff’s Department’s Field Training Program in September 2025 until completion. The training schedule will be communicated to you by the Sheriff’s Department. You will be responsible for knowing your training and work schedule and attending all necessary training and work obligations.

Pay/Benefits
• Intern will earn $15.00/hour when attending Law Enforcement Academy
• Kenosha County will sponsor intern to attend Law Enforcement Academy
• This position is not benefit eligible except for benefits as mandated under the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS)

Requirements
• Ability to meet physical, mental, and psychological qualifications of a Deputy
• Ability to perform certified law enforcement officer duties to include: performing traffic stops, responding to high-risk calls, controlling large crowds at events, and all other law enforcement-related activities
• Ability to function in situations which may rapidly change from those during routine patrol operations to those which are emergencies and highly stressful and dangerous

Qualifications
Applicants who do not meet all of the requirements listed will be disqualified.
• Must be a citizen of the United States
• Must be not less than 18 years of age upon date of hire
• May not have been convicted at any time of a felony, unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed

Driving Record
• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• During the time period beginning on the date three (3) years immediately preceding the date of the written test and continuing to the date of appointment, may not have been convicted of any single violation equivalent to more than four (4) points and have accumulated no more than the equivalent of six (6) points, as assessed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles

Education and Training
At time of oral interview, applicants must possess and show proof of the following:
• High school diploma or equivalent; and
• Copy of a DD-214 (4) member copy, if applicable
Documentation of education and training must be provided to Human Resources prior to oral interview.

The State of Wisconsin’s Physical Readiness Test is required to be admitted into the Law Enforcement Academy. The below chart shows the pass/fail standard.

The Physical Readiness Test is a Pass/Fail test. If you fail any portion of the test you fail the entire test, and you will be removed from consideration from the selection process. Applicants who are not currently certified or certifiable must meet the Physical Readiness Test entrance standards set by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Training and Standards Bureau, to be eligible for admission to the law enforcement academy – Physical Readiness Introductory Letter
