Job Summary
Primary responsibility for the Assistant Naturalist is environmental education program delivery and all duties surrounding this important function. In addition, this position performs maintenance of buildings and grounds of the 1,000+ acre L.H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve County Park. Work Schedule/Hours:
This is a 40 hour/week position. Shifts are primarily during the week with various evening and weekend shifts each moth for programs and park staffing needs.
Essential Duties
Conducts environmental educational programming for audiences of all ages and abilities.

Research and compiles data as necessary to make program information relevant and school curriculum based. Evaluates information and makes recommendations regarding the development of new programs and/or modification of existing programs.

Answers questions regarding the natural history of Northeast Wisconsin.

Performs administrative duties which includes environmental education program scheduling, invoicing and payment, public program registration, writing press releases, creating informational flyers and materials, answering park phone and returning messages and emails.

Performs landscape and grounds maintenance which includes grass mowing, line trimming, tree and shrub pruning, weeding, planting, mulching, picking up trash, blowing leaves and debris, storm clean ups, etc.

Performs trail maintenance which includes trimming brush, trail surface repair, regular trail inspections, storm clean ups, signage installation and inspection, inspections of observation platforms, ramps, boardwalks, ad other structures and perform repairs as needed.

Performs building maintenance including daily restroom and nature center cleaning, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, wiping down tables and chairs, washing windows, painting, etc.

Performs maintenance of the nature center which includes routine care for live animals and their enclosures and maintaining the displays and interactive exhibits. Assists in the design and construction of nature center exhibits.

Operates trucks, tractors, trailers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, snow removal equipment, firefighting equipment and other park related equipment.

Works outdoors for extended periods of time in all seasons.

Clears snow from walks and study areas in winter.

Assists in maintaining park security and public safety.

Collects and accounts for user fees.

Performs maintenance and enforcement at the Suamico Boat Launch, which includes cleaning restrooms, launch fee enforcement and grounds maintenance.

Performs work and assists staff at other Brown County Parks as needed for grounds and building maintenance.

Performs related functions as assigned.

Assumes managerial duties in the absence of the Park Ranger and Manager when required.

Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Education, Biology or similar degree and some experience in the area of public communication, animal husbandry and landscaping; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid WI driver’s license is required.
First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to obtain.
American Canoe Association, Level 1+ Certified Kayak Guide, or the ability to obtain.
National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide, or the ability to obtain.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of the care, handling and feeding of a variety of small reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish and other animals.

Knowledge of natural history; plant, animal, freshwater and environmental biology.

Basic knowledge of the maintaining and repair of park facilities.

Ability to speak in public regarding a variety of nature programs and topics.

Knowledge of kayaking, or able to learn the skills per American Canoe Association standards.

Knowledge of landscape, park grounds and trail maintenance.

Ability to work cooperatively with other park personnel and the general public.

Ability to work outside for extended periods of time.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to input and retrieve data using computer.

Ability to read and write at a level required for successful job performance.

Ability to administer first aid and CPR.

Ability to develop and maintain clear and concise records, reports and files.

Ability to work the required hours of the position, including evenings, weekends, holidays and irregular hours.
