Lead Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic
Job Summary
Performs skilled work in preventive maintenance and mechanical of automotive, construction, road equipment, facility, and building equipment. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, landfill compactor(s), dozers, off-road haul truck, excavator, frontend loader, skid steer, street sweeper, snowplow truck, pickup trucks, UTV, four-wheeler, and small engine equipment.
NOTE: Must be available to work overtime, weekends, nights, and holidays as required (for emergency repairs).
Essential Duties
Inspect and maintain equipment for operation
Fill out inspection logs and/or verify completion of inspection logs and inspection completion by equipment operators
Maintain vehicle maintenance history and logs
Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures
Development, maintain, adhere to maintenance schedules
Develop standard operation procedures for equipment maintenance and repairs
Diagnose equipment faults
Adjust, repair, and replace equipment parts and components to maintain optimum performance
Estimates time and material costs on equipment repairs and parts
Cleaning, lubricating, and conducting routine services on equipment
Lookup part numbers and order parts
Inventory parts, fluids, and tools and equipment
Reporting damaged or faulty equipment to supervisor.
Perform preventative maintenance and routine services.
Complete services and repairs in a landfill environment.
Perform fabricating, welding, brazing or cutting, and other equipment shop work.
Clean and maintain work area
Facility maintenance as needed (building repairs, mowing, street sweeping, etc.)
Fill in for snow removal and frontend assistance as needed
Operate all equipment that may need repairs and when repairs are completed to ensure proper function
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Hand tools and wrenches for equipment repair
Power (electric and/or pneumatic) tools for equipment and repair
Electronic diagnostic testing equipment and tools
Engine compression testing equipment and tools
Engine timing equipment and tools
Gas and diesel engine fuel system testing tools
Drill press lathe milling machine
Shear and brake press
Air conditioning recovery, recycling and recharging equipment
Auto Lift and Jib Crane
Welder
Band saw
Cutting torch
Materials such as oil, fuel, lubricants, grease, parts cleaner, etc.
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited technical college in auto or diesel mechanics, plus three years of garage
mechanic experience working on large diesel engines; or any equivalent combination of education, training
and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certification:
Valid Class B CDL or higher preferred.
Certification as a diesel mechanic preferred
2 years of mechanic experience preferred
Motor vehicle air conditioning certification is beneficial
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the repair of automotive, construction and
maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of safety hazards and relevant safety precautions
Knowledge of operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
Ability to work with multiple OEM diagnostic software
Ability to keep records, log repairs and track maintenance needs and repairs
Ability to understand repair and specification manuals.
Ability to use proper methods, tools and equipment in the repair of equipment.
Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Ability to use a computer for parts lookup and ordering
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
Ability to work the required hours of the position.
Ability to assist in snow removal when needed.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift 75 pounds maximum with the assistance of another person, and frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
Intermittent standing, walking and sitting; occasional driving.
Frequent bending, twisting, squatting, climbing and reaching.
Ability to communicate orally in a clear manner
Ability to distinguish sounds at various frequencies and volumes.
Ability to distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.
Ability to tolerate exposure to cold, heat, noise, vibrations, parts cleaners, oil and fuel and hazards in the work environment.
