Registered Occupational Therapist

Job Summary
Provides patient assessment and treatment to long-term care residents and short-term clients with physical disabilities or mental illness by performing interventions to improve adaptive function in occupational performance categories. These may include, but are not limited to, social skills, leisure, cognition, daily living skills and perceptions of self-worth. The position includes responsibility for managing, developing, consulting, teaching, implementing and coordinating therapy programs at the Brown County Community Treatment Center (CTC).

Essential Duties
Screens and evaluates patients and develops individualized plans of care.

Communicates effectively and contributes to the multidisciplinary team for decision-making processes.

Provides training to patients, families, caregivers and other personnel.

Observes, records and reports individual behaviors, reactions and progress through clinical documentation on a timely basis, consistent with facility, state and federal standards.

Demonstrates working knowledge and application of Medicare, Medicaid and other reimbursement systems, including the Minimum Data Set system.

Participates in clinical program development and implementation for occupational therapy and activities.

Participates in teaching and orientation of new and existing personnel as needed or identified.

Participates in new learning to remain current with changes within the field and psychiatric community.

Participates in quality improvement programs.

Ensures delivery of quality rehabilitation procedures, providing direct occupational therapy service delivery and assessments as prescribed.

Coordinates interdisciplinary approaches for the various consumer population’s physical and behavioral needs.

Plans and implements group activities, treatment modalities and procedures including group therapy
sessions in the areas such as art, games, crafts, education, recreation, religions, exercise, conversation, creative writing, etc. Groups small and large patient groups.

Contributes and exchanges information and feedback with the multidisciplinary team.

Assumes responsibility for program development and growth

Assists patients in meeting their treatment goals and revises plans of care as needed.

Supervises, mentors, leads and directs the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA’s) and Activity Department personnel.

Maintains confidential nature of client and business information.

Orientates, trains and directs volunteer program

Establishes and maintains liaison with other therapy services and provides for the development of treatment programs.

Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships with clients.

Assists in developing departmental budget, completes purchase requests and maintains supplies for the department.

Attends staff meetings, in-services and outside agency training sessions as requested or required.

Communicates with Human Resources for the assessment and/or issuance of disciplinary action.

Identifies potentially unsafe situations and takes appropriate action.

Manages the schedule for employees within the department.

Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:

Minimum of Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program, Master’s Degree preferred
Licensure in the State of Wisconsin
N.B.C.O.T. Certified

Two years clinical experience preferred with six months experience in working with mentally ill, developmentally/physically disabled, elder adults, dementia/cognitive diseases and/or alcohol and other drug abuse clients; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities for working with the consumer population of the Community Treatment Center.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of occupational therapy.

Knowledge of normal and abnormal psychology, behavior management techniques, chronic mentally ill, AODA clients, as well, as medical and cognitive conditions.

Knowledge of group process techniques.

Knowledge of certified occupational therapy assistant supervision requirements.

Knowledge of current practices and methods of occupational therapy as practiced in the Nursing Home, Psychiatric Hospital and Crisis Stabilization C.B.R.F.

Knowledge of the needs of developmentally disabled, chronic mentally ill, AODA clients, physically and cognitively disabled, dementia and long term care

Knowledge of federal, state and other accreditation standards/rules/regulations.

Knowledge of principles of documentation.

Knowledge of therapeutic media and safe operation/ maintenance of departmental power equipment.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software.

Skill in communicating individuals with mental illness, large groups, the public and other professionals.

Ability to plan recreational, therapeutic and restorative activities.

Ability to observe and interpret therapy programs to consumers and other disciplines

Ability to conduct assessments.

Ability to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with clients, family members/significant others.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to organize and plan activities.

Ability to lead and participate in all aspects of occupational therapy

Ability to deal with stress due to threatening or unpredictable client behavior.

Ability to keep accurate records.

Ability to plan and prepare a budget.

Ability to understand and carry out policies and procedures governing client care.
