Job Title: Public Health Nurse
Pay Range: $28.37-$31.15 per hour
Hours: Regular Full-Time/40 hours per week; Monday-Friday
Department: Lafayette County Health Department
Reports to: Agency Director/Health Officer
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Position Purpose: Performs all population-focused, community-oriented nursing care, and the core functions of public health.

Essential Functions:
• Provides appropriate prevention and control of communicable diseases through education and intervention using epidemiological principles.
• Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates immunization program.
• Participates in emergency preparedness planning, response and recovery.
• Participates in ongoing community assessment program planning and implementation.
• Coordinates assigned grant activities, as directed by the Director.
• Assists in the collection of data for statistical information/analysis.
• Provides screening, referral and follow up for the purpose of identifying health needs.
• Collaborates on environmental health and human health hazard situations.
• Promotes Public Health prevention programs.
• Plans and implements the school nursing programs in the school(s) assigned.
• Assists in the preparation/contribution to public health policies and procedures.
• Educates and advises individuals and families on the control, treatment and prevention of disease and the maintenance of good general health and wellness.
• Assists with clinics and special projects when assigned.
• Represents the Agency in community groups and activities, task forces, coalitions, work groups and educational presentations as assigned.
• Assumes responsibility for office intake when available.
• Participates in in-service, continuing education activities, staff meetings and conferences.
• Performs other activities as assigned.

Minimum Educational Requirements:
• BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from a nursing program accredited by the national professional nursing education accrediting organization or from a nursing program accredited by the board of nursing, either of which shall include preparation in public health nursing (per WI Statute DHS 139.08 and requirements of WI Chapter 441).
• One-two years of experience performing nursing duties related to the position preferred.
• Must be licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Wisconsin.
• Current CPR/AED certification desirable or will attain within six months of employment.
• Must have a valid Driver’s License and access to a private vehicle for work related duties that meets county insurance requirements.
• Bilingual in Spanish/English highly preferred, but not required.

Required Skills and Knowledge:
• Excellent skills using all Microsoft programs, emphasis on Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Excellent problem solving/judgement skills and a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure.
• Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of the theory, techniques, practices and standards of professional nursing.
• Knowledge of public health and communicable disease.
• Skill in the administration of immunizations and basic phlebotomy skills.
• Ability to work independently in meeting a variety of public health regulations and requirements.
• Excellent communication skills: courteous and respectful of clients/patients/public, ability to speak to groups/give oral group presentations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, community groups, school personnel and state and regional public health agencies.
• Must be able to record/document/assemble client records accurately.
• Must have excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of HIPAA/Confidentiality laws for Public Health.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Ability to seek and utilize supervision to improve professional practice.
• Must be able to understand and carry out directions and instructions.

Physical Demands:
• Requires functional vision and hearing.
• Requires ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
• Requires manual finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
• Must be able to function in an office setting with background noise and distractions.
• Requires clear verbal communication.
