3 – 6 month limited-term position
The Behavioral Health Technician provides guidance and support services for consumers referred to the agency. In addition, the position assists case management staff with programmatic screening, assessment, and crisis services to support the needs of the department. This position performs a variety of duties to promote recovery including Chapter 34 mobile assessments, telephone screening, appointment scheduling, assisting by providing services to assist consumers and their natural/formal supports, working with consumers regarding employment skills, transportation and other activities of daily living. Work is performed under supervision of the Program Manager or Department Director. The position will offer consumers the opportunity to engage with others through meaningful activities and provide assistance as necessary. This is a high-energy job that requires independence and a desire to help consumers work on their individualized recovery plan.

Essential Duties: These duties represent the typical duties and responsibilities assigned to this position but may not be inclusive of all tasks performed.

Assists the consumer and/or their natural supports to: identify symptoms of physical and/or behavioral health conditions, monitor physical and/or behavioral health medications and treatments, and develop other skills that will help monitor and manage their physical and/or behavioral health.
Provide Individual Skill Development to assist the consumer with advocating for their needs, communicate better with others, problem solving, decision-making, managing emotions, resolving conflict, developing a natural support system, and addressing any other social needs they may have.
Provide Individual and/or Family education and informational resources, emotional and social support, skills training, problems solving, and guidance related to managing their mental health and/or substance abuse condition.
Provide Wellness Management and Recovery Support Services to empower the consumer to manage their mental health and/or substance abuse condition, engage in treatment, help them develop goals, and teach them the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed treatment decisions.
Provide other approved learning strategies to help the consumer to modify their behaviors such as: relapse prevention; development of a recovery action plan; recovery and/or resilience training; development of treatment strategies; social support building; and coping skills development.
Attend team meetings with the consumer and/or other team members.
Complete all required documentation timely, accurately, and respectfully
Develop healing and trauma-sensitive relationships with peers and staff.
Maintain confidentially concerning all verbal and written information, whether obtained from peers or otherwise, with exception of reporting all intended, serious harm to self or others immediately to the appropriate person.

Education/Experience:

Associate Degree in human services or related field(s), Bachelor’s degree preferred
One year experience working in the behavioral health or substance use field; including 1,000 hours of supervised work experience with long-term mentally ill individuals
Combination of education and experience providing the equivalent level of knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
A /behavioral health technician providing CSP services who does not meet the requirements below must achieve at least one of these requirements within one year from the mental/behavioral health technician’s date of employment.
Approval from the DDES’s Bureau of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services of an educational curriculum for the mental/behavioral health technician. The agency must then provide or purchase the training.
Certification by the American Occupational Therapy Association as an occupational therapy assistant.
A licensed practical nurse under s. 441.10, Wis. Stats.
Completion of the training requirements under HFS 133.17(4), Wis. Admin. Code for a home health aide.
Inclusion in the registry of persons under HFS 129.10, Wis. Admin. Code, who have completed a nurse’s assistant training and testing program or only a testing program.
Satisfaction of the requirements under HFS 105.17(3)(a)1, Wis. Admin. Code, to provide personal care services and completion of an additional 1,000 hours of supervised work experience with long-term mentally ill persons
Must successfully complete health care background check.
Must have valid drive’s license.

Minimum Skills Assessment Requirements Ability to establish professional relationship with consumers and peers. Strong customer service background, organizational skills, and oral and written communication skills; must be detail-oriented. Skills and abilities may be evaluated through various standardized pre-employment assessment tools.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: Requires a valid Wisconsin Drivers license
