Library Specialist
The Portage County Public Library is hiring a full-time (40 hrs / wk) Library Specialist to join their team! This position is based out of the Stevens Point location, however some hours may be spent at the other branch locations.
What are the primary job duties?
Orders and receives library materials.
Receives order requests from selectors and determines most economical purchasing source, unless source is specified.
Places orders to suppliers electronically or via telephone.
Uses the library’s acquisition software (GetIt Acquisitions) to create purchase orders and track material funds.
Performs bibliographic record searching and matching to link ordered items to existing catalog records, and to create original order records when necessary.
Receives materials, records order receipts in GetIt Acquisitions, assigns barcodes to items, and sends item records to catalog.
Forwards invoices for payment, indicating funds to which items are charged.
Identifies incomplete or incorrect orders; tracks standing orders, cancelled orders, etc.; sends claims or returns as necessary; notifies suppliers and selectors as necessary.
Orders, receives, and maintains inventory of general library supplies.
Receives supply requests, determines appropriate fund to allocate (if not specified), and initiates orders of general supplies when inventory is low.
Maintains accurate records of purchases (such as keeping necessary receipts and invoices).
Checks supplies received against receipts/invoices, and contacts vendor for claim or return when necessary.
Issues supplies to appropriate library staff or storage shelves.
Performs a wide variety of basic customer service activities at the reference service desk.
Assists library users (both adults and children) in person and via telephone with direct and indirect reference questions, information, and reader’s advisory services.
Assists library users in the use of technology such as library computers and peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.), software (Microsoft Word, internet browsers, etc.), and library specific resources (online catalog, Libby, etc.).
May assist borrowers in selection and location of library materials through the online catalog and through interlibrary loan or refer library users with complex questions to appropriate personnel.
May answer questions regarding status of patron and circulation records or refer library users with complex questions to appropriate personnel.
What are minimum education and experience requirements?
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Library Science classes preferred.
Two years general library experience preferred.
Background in library technical services or comparable experience preferred.
Knowledge of computer software such as Windows Operating System, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Access.
Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
