Job Title: Highway Patrol Superintendent
Hours: Regular Full-Time/40 hours per week
Pay Range: $31.33 – 33.12 per hour, based on experience; plus, longevity, if applicable

Position Summary: The Patrol Superintendent confers daily with the Highway Commissioner regarding work assignments and giving updates on projects and job tasks. He/she must be able to manage highway maintenance and construction activities; set up efficient work crews; represent management on highway maintenance operations when dealing with other units of government (Sheriff’s Dept.), the public, private contractors and news media; act as department safety coordinator; and perform related work as required. This position includes a county owned vehicle for work use only.
Qualifications:
• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• MSHA or equivalent experience preferred
• Basic training and knowledge in computer concepts and bookkeeping preferred
• Five years of highway maintenance work experience including two years of such as a supervisor and/or foreman with proven leadership qualities required
• Must be able to react to emergency situations that may arise on a 24/7 basis such as snowstorms, floods, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of highway maintenance operation
• Knowledge of equipment used and proper application of equipment
• Knowledge of the principles of industrial safety
• Knowledge of supervisory practices
• Ability to plan, organize and assign work
• Ability to deal with a wide range of people in order to promote good public relations
• Ability to apply accepted supervisory principles
• Ability to work in unity with the Highway Commissioner and provide unified management decisions to employees and others
Essential Functions:
• Respond to emergency road situations in a calm, responsible manner while making immediate decisions to address the situation or emergency
• Assign all duties for Lafayette County Highway personnel
• Schedule and assign all construction crews and equipment
• Assist State personnel relative to scheduling and assignment of personnel and equipment on all State maintenance and construction projects conducted by Lafayette County with concurrence of Highway Commissioner
• Respond to questions from the public, news media, private contractors, utility companies, etc. related to highway maintenance or construction activities
• Maintain operational records, timecards and perform other administrative duties of the Superintendent’s office
• Conduct performance evaluations, effectively recommending disciplinary action on subordinates
• Provide instructions on policies and procedures
• Performs other duties as assigned

Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
Work Environment:
This position requires exposure to extreme weather conditions (snow, sleet, wind, rain, heat, flooding), and checking roads in all of these weather conditions. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
