Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment and performs general unskilled and skilled labor involving Solid Waste Operations both at the transfer station and landfill or the maintenance and construction of roads, ditches and other infrastructure.

Must be able to work weekends.
Essential Duties
Operates equipment such as solid waste compactors, graders, scrapers, excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, skid-steer, front-end loaders, sweepers, tractor/mowers, tow motors, tractors/mowers, trailers, rollers, off road trucks etc.

Performs hand work, shovels, erects and removes snow fences, etc. Picks up litter and debris; works independently or with a work crew.

Maintains, cleans, and washes equipment, vehicles, and facilities.

Services, changes oil, grease, fuel, and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, working with the mechanic(s) as necessary.

Operates and maintains equipment, and other ancillary equipment.

Performs daily pre-trip inspections and routine, preventive maintenance services on equipment.

Performs minor equipment repairs and reports mechanical issues to appropriate staff.

Operates refuse compactors and bulldozers by spreading and compacting refuse.

Spreads, covers and maintains landfill slopes and surface areas with track type equipment.

Operates equipment at transfer stations, loads transfer trucks.

Operates hook truck and other equipment at various locations on site in support of landfill diversion or other resources recovery programs.

Installs alternative daily cover systems

May assist in the maintenance and/or construction of the landfill gas collection and control system.

Performs general grounds maintenance to include litter and erosion control activities.

Perform spotter or traffic control as needed

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs related functions as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent, plus experience with heavy duty equipment operation, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid Wisconsin Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License desired, but not necessary

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License, Landfill Site Operator certification (obtainable within 1 year of hire)
