Role: The Environmental Health Technician works with the Environmental Health and Public Health teams to perform diverse environmental health duties. This position works closely with local operators to assure safety and compliance in food and drinking establishments, temporary events, lodging and rooming houses, body art, schools, swimming pools, camps and campgrounds, and other businesses regulated by local and state health ordinances. Job duties also include investigation of citizen questions and complaints, working to prevent and mitigate health and safety hazards, water lab analysis, and DNR water sampling.
Required Qualifications:
• At least an associate degree from an accredited college, university, community college, or technical institute in environmental, physical, biological, or chemical sciences
OR
• At least an associate degree from an accredited college, community college, or technical institute and 3 years of full-time equivalent employment in the field of environmental health (air quality, food protection, hazardous substances, product safety, housing, institutional health, wastewater technology and management, hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene and water supply).
The Environmental Health Technician may be expected to become a Registered Sanitarian within 5 years from date of hire, which could be obtained on work hours.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of computerized information systems and data analysis. Skills in critical analysis, problem-solving, priority-setting, and communication.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors degree from an accredited college, university, community college, or technical institute in environmental, physical, biological, or chemical sciences. A Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) certification OR have the eligibility to obtain the Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or the NEHA REHS/RS within three years of hire. Credit in a college level Math or Statistics class. At least 2 years of full-time equivalent employment in the field of environmental or public health.
Compensation, Benefits and Hours: This part-time (29 hours per week) position has a starting wage of $21.36 to $23.80 per hour based on experience plus fringe benefit package including Health, Dental, Life and Income Continuation Insurances and PTO (Paid Time Off). Position works weekdays with the occasional need to work evenings and/or weekends.
