Purpose of the Position

The purpose of the Educational Navigator position is to design and implement a pilot program which provides education navigation services to Sauk County residents who are justice involved (enrolled in a Sauk County criminal justice program or on active probation and parole) in need of their GED/HSED.

***This is a limited term position that will have an average of 30 working hours per week. No benefits will be offered with this position and it shall last 4.5 months.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Identify, address and reduce barriers that keep individuals in the jail, Huber, ATC, MAT, and extended release from pursuing, obtaining, and completing education, training, testing, and credentialing programs.

• Provide logistical assistance dealing with transportation issues to testing sites.

• Secure, coordinate, and monitor necessary adjunctive services involving staff through appropriate, educational agencies and community resources.

• Working closely with partner agencies to ensure program participants are referred, engaged, and supported.

• Design and provide incentives for individuals in Sauk County’s criminal justice system to seek education, tutoring, and complete testing to obtain a GED or HSED.

• Provide program planning and implementation support to the Re-entry Coordinator and work toward criminal justice program system change.

• Increase participants seeking, obtaining, and retaining employment, which will lead to greater access to health care, improved health conditions, and reduced adverse childhood experiences and trauma for children of the incarcerated

• Designing and providing educational navigation services to target groups. May involve developing an MOU with University of Platteville Sauk County, Baraboo Campus to utilize their student tutors, computer lab, and potential on-site location.

• Investigate and assist in the process to make the Baraboo Campus a certified GED testing site.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

• Data entry, documentation, aggregated data reporting.

• And other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Calculating percentages, fractions, decimals, interest, discounts, and interpreting basic descriptive statistical reports

• Knowledge of Wisconsin and local criminal justice systems

• Ability to understand evidence based treatment modalities and basic knowledge of psychopharmacology

• Understanding of human growth and behavior as it applies to the Criminal Justice System

• Computer skills, such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database management

• Compare, count, differentiate, measure, sort, classify, compute, tabulate, and/or categorize data and/or information

• Assemble, copy, record, and transcribe data and/or information

• Analyze data and information using established criteria to define consequences and consider and select alternatives

• Apply functional and situational reasoning by exercising judgement, decisiveness, and creativity in everyday routine and non-routine situations

• Use fine and gross motor skills to perform tasks such as operating an electronic ballot tabulator, keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and computer printer

• Exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, involving lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling

• Recognize and identify degrees of similarity and differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, odors, textures, etc. associated with objects, materials, and ingredients

Environment

• Safe and comfortable in respects to violence, noise, and disease, with some potential for exposure to violence.

Required Working Hours

Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Please note these hours are subject to change and additional hours may be needed or required. Compensation for additional hours beyond normal working hours are subject to applicable state and federal regulations.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: Associate degree (A.S. or A.A.) in Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, Mental Health or another related field or two year technical certificate.

Preferred: Other experience in mental health, criminal justice and recovery health services preferred.

Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
