Job Summary
Provides daily care and maintenance of domestic and some exotic species. Assists with care of sensitive and more dangerous species under the direction of the Zookeeper.
Essential Duties
Responsible for maintaining high animal care and exhibit quality standards for domestic and some exotic zoological specimens in accordance with industry standards.

Provides behavioral enrichment and implements training programs for zoo animals.

Inspects, cleans and oversees exhibit areas to insure safe and sanitary conditions for both public and collection specimens.

Maintains records and observations on collection and reports routinely to manager on status of individual animals.

Assists in minor surgery and medical procedures, and administers medications as necessary under the direction of manager or veterinarian.

Performs general and preventative maintenance work on zoo grounds and facilities to include landscaping, cleaning, mowing, painting, and minor construction.

Assists in training and direction of assigned volunteers, interns, and seasonal staff.

Assists in development and presentation of public educational programs pertaining to the zoo.

Assists in enforcement of park ordinances and public safety.

Performs related functions as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:
Associate degree or equivalent education in biological field, captive wildlife, animal husbandry, wildlife or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Previous relevant experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
General working knowledge of building and grounds maintenance.

General working knowledge of captive wildlife husbandry.

General knowledge of horticultural and landscaping methods.

Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software (Microsoft Word, ZIMS).

Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

Ability to operate trucks, tractors, and power equipment.

Ability to follow detailed instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to work with all species in the zoo collection.

Ability to answer inquiries and complaints effectively with tact and courtesy.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

Ability to use a firearm and tranquilizer gun.

Ability to work the required hours of the position.
