Do you have good judgment and communication skills with the ability to multi-task and make quick decisions? If so, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a 911 Dispatcher!

This position can be challenging, but it is also rewarding! You will be assisting law enforcement, Fire, and EMS services.

I. Position Summary

This position description has been prepared to assist in evaluating duties, responsibilities, and skills of the position. It is not intended as a complete list of specific responsibilities and duties, nor is it intended to limit duties to those listed.

This position performs dispatch services within the operations of the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office 911 dispatch center for emergency and non-emergency situations. Employee is under general supervision of Sheriff/Administrative Staff and uses independent judgment in providing dispatching services.

II. Employment Standards

· Must possess a high school diploma or GED

· Within a specific time period, satisfactory completion of a prescribed training program

· Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with adequate auto insurance to meet minimum County requirements, or access to reliable transportation for city and rural travel

· Training and experience in 9-1-1 dispatching are preferred

· Possession of an associate degree in police science is desirable

· Ability to type 35 words per minute is desirable

· Must pass background check and other requirements

· Must be 18 years of age at hire.

· Must be a United States citizen or must have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past ten (10) consecutive years.

· Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation

· Must be able to perform essential job functions

· Must have never committed, been involved in, or been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

· Must be of good character and reputation.

· Must have the ability to work within a 24/7 operation environment, which requires the ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays to include rotating days off. Must also be able to accept last minute schedule changes in case of emergencies or shift coverage issues.

· Depending on assignment, position typically requires touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions

· Approximately 95% of the time is spent sitting, hearing, using near vision, reading, talking, using computer terminal

· Approximately 5% of the time is spent walking, standing, bending, handling, using far-vision, lifting/carrying up to 40 pounds

· Listens to radio communications and responds with voice quality that transmits with clarity.

· May have option to utilize headsets and foot pedals for phone/radio communication

· Works in front of computers at all times

Within a specific time period and by training set up by the department, trainees must attain and maintain the following certifications:

· Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

· Certification in Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

· Certification in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)

· Certification in the operation of the Wisconsin TIME System (CIB/NCIC)

III. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Knowledge of modern office procedures and computer equipment

· Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws and ordinances

· Skill in organization and time management while prioritizing in a multi-tasking environment

· Skill in problem solving

· Ability to listen and obtain essential information by telephone

· Ability to listen and respond effectively to abusive and excited callers without deterioration of quality of service

· Ability to quickly assess the scope and magnitude of an emergency

· Ability to demonstrate understanding, compassion and empathy

· Ability to act quickly and decisively while remaining calm, and working effectively under stress

· Ability to speak clearly and concisely in English, as well as spelling correctly

· Ability to maintain control and manage calls with tact, judgment, confidence and authority

· Ability to learn methods and techniques of emergency dispatching

· Ability to learn to process information and make sound decisions

· Ability to learn the geography and surrounding area of Vernon County

· Ability to type, with minimal errors, at a speed necessary for successful job performance

IV. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Receives and transmits oral and written orders and information by radio, computer, and telephone to law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, highway maintenance and/or other emergency and non-emergency services.

· Operates a sophisticated work station comprised of multiple computer systems including county radio system, 9-1-1 and office phone systems, geographical mapping tools, Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) System and other computer and office equipment, as necessary.

· Documents phone and radio communications and actions taken in accordance with prescribed procedures.

· Operates the Department of Justice TIME system computer program according to policy and procedures.

· Receives state and federal civil defense calls and relays information to appropriate municipality.

· Operates all equipment within the dispatch center and monitors its operation to assure proper functioning.

· Assists with walk-ins of the general public such as requests to talk to staff or the filing of complaints.

· Prepares reports and performs clerical support services such as filing, searching files through data processing equipment, providing input, etc.

· Maintains public and law enforcement confidentiality when dealing with public and law enforcement either in person, by phone or other means of communication.

· Provides information to the district attorney and the court as well as provides testimony, if requested.

· Serves as primary point of contact for reporting all 9-1-1 emergencies and non-emergencies within Vernon County and possibly surrounding areas.

· Represents the county and department in a professional manner and with a high level of professionalism.

· Provides information and directions to callers, law enforcement, fire/EMS and other public safety agencies.

· During a life-threatening emergency, establishes communications with the caller, provide safety/life-saving instructions, and maintains control of the conversation until units arrive on the scene.

· Interacts with callers who may be injured, distressed, distraught and/or emotional, and also public safety personnel on the telephone and radio to accurately communicate information and instructions in all situations.

· Gathers pertinent information obtained from the caller and enters it into the CAD System, consistent with proper protocols.

· Facilitates language interpretation between non-English speaking callers and interpreters

· Provides all services in a “manual mode” (non-computerized environment) when primary CAD System is not available.

· Receives and responds to calls from various hotlines including Crime Stoppers, alarm companies, etc.

· Monitors status of officers via radio, MACH System, and CAD System

· Queries people/vehicles in different database systems with the Wisconsin TIME System

· Processes arrest warrants and protection/restraining orders received from the court

· Sends out crime alerts upon request from officers

· Entry of data into the department Records Management System (RMS)

· Monitors different security camera systems

V. Related Job Functions

· Attends staff meetings and training sessions

· Responsible for working safely and following safety practices and standards of the facility; responsible for reporting and/or correcting any existing or potential safety/accident hazards

· May perform cleaning duties within the dispatch center

· May receive and record fines and bail money

· Performs related work as required or directed

· Monitors department email messages and facsimiles

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $26.62 per hour

Expected hours: 38 per week
